Volunteer

Volunteers provide valuable support for OCISO clients and staff. Volunteering is a wonderful opportunity to use your talents and to gain new skills and experiences in a culturally diverse environment.

Volunteer Opportunities

  • Enjoy working with computers and students!  LINC South (Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada) is looking for  volunteers to assist school age children enhance their computer skills while their parents are attending English language classes.  
    Times: 5:00-7:30 p.m.
    Location: LINC South, 1800 Bank Street.  
  • Volunteers for Summer Camp (July and August) at  LINC South and East (Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada). A Summer camp for students 7-12 years of age while their parents are attending English language classes.
    Times: 9:00 a.m. 2:30 p.m.  
    Location: LINC South, 1800 Bank Street, LINC East, 225 Donald Street.
     
  • Teach English to Newcomer high school students
    Volunteer teachers and assistants needed to teach English to newcomer students in grades 9-12
    Times: July 2 – 31 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. (Monday to Friday)
    Location: Ridgemont High School.

  • Teach French and Academic subjects to Newcomer high school students
    Volunteer teachers and assistants needed to teach French and academic subjects to newcomer students in grades 9-12
    Times: July 2 – 31 from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. (Monday to Friday)
    Location: at a local high school.

  • Computer Lab volunteers to assist ESL students
    Times: Monday to Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
    Location: LINC South (1800 Bank Street) or
    LINC East (225 Donald Street)
    Volunteers must be 16 years of age.

  • Mom to Mom Companion
    There is a newcomer mom in our community who can benefit from your friendship, guidance, knowledge of the life and of parenthood.  All it takes is just a few hours a month.  You can have a positive influence and make a contribution to someone’s life, a whole family and your community.  Newcomer moms are seeking your support and are asking for your advice about parenting and life in Canada.  If you have experience with children and understand the joys and trials of parenting, share your time and knowledge by becoming a Mom Companion.  As a volunteer you will provide a mom with support, friendship, encouragement and opportunities to connect with other programs and resources within the community.  The Program invites women of all backgrounds and languages. 

  • Employment Mentor (click for details)
    Share your advice, guidance and knowledge of the working world with an internationally trained professional seeking to secure employment in their field.  We are seeking volunteer employment mentors to engage in a mentoring partnership with internationally trained mentees from a similar professional background. 

  • Adult High School
    Assist an immigrant adult student in their goals to complete high school. 
    Times: Daytime. 
    Location: Adult High School (Gladstone and Preston Streets). 
    All subjects. 

  • Income Tax Assistance
    Register now to assist OCISO clients with their tax returns at evening tax clinics in March and April at OCISO. 

  • Homework Tutor – Math and Science
    Assist high school students in math and science in the evenings or on week-ends. 
    Many locations.
