Help at School: Multicultural Liaison Officers
OCISO has Multicultural Liaison Officer (MLO) Program partnerships with three area school boards to address the settlement and educational needs of immigrant children and their families. MLOs facilitate the provision of cross-cultural information to assist both immigrants and the school system in more than 20 languages.

We have partnerships with:
- Ottawa-Carleton District School Board
- Conseil des écoles publiques de l’Est de l’Ontario
- Conseil des écoles catholiques de langue française du Centre-Est

MLOs work with schools and communities to:
- Provide information about the education system and the roles and responsibilities of students and parents
- Refer newcomer families to community resources to help them adjust to life in Canada
- Inform parents about the educational and social development of their children and about events at the school
- Provide support services and advocacy for students and parents
- Provide language and cultural interpretation and mediation at meetings between staff members, parents and students
- Help immigrant parents get involved in their children’s education through understanding; volunteering; becoming a School Council member
- Promote multiculturalism and cross-cultural communication among students in our schools
- Provide cross-cultural competency training and workshops for school staff and students
- Liaise between the school and community about changes in the community’s demographic profile, partnership possibilities and issues of concern
